Panthers sign K Catanzaro with Gano ailing

Updated: 07-12-2018 21:37 IST

Former Buccaneers kicker Chandler Catanzaro signed with the Panthers on Friday to provide Carolina insurance in the event Graham Gano's balky left knee keeps him out of Sunday's game against the Cleveland Browns.

Gano first appeared on the injury report last Friday with a knee injury. The Panthers are carrying two kickers on their 53-man roster.

A spot was created on Friday when guard Amini Silatolu (knee) was placed on injured reserve.

Tampa Bay released Catanzaro after he missed two kicks in a Week 10 loss against Washington. Catanzaro beat the Browns in overtime two weeks prior, drilling a 59-yard field goal for the win. It was the longest overtime field goal in NFL history.

Prior to being released, Catanzaro made 11 of 15 field goals and converted 23 of 27 extra points.
