"The mechanical heart is a bridge to transplant for those who would not otherwise have been given a donation," Jan Pirk, head of the medical team told. The mechanical heart gets placed on the abdomen and connected to the heart muscle.
Doctors in France used this remedy of putting mechanical heart five years ago, and the Czech Republic was the third country. The artificial heart weighs 800 grams, which is about three times heavier and larger than the human heart. The internal layout is the same. 17 sensors monitor the condition of the patient and then the decision regarding the transplantation has been taken.
In the artificial heart system, the lead leads to the external part with the batteries, through the abdominal wall of the patient, and the patient has to carry the control unit along with him.
According to the Czech media, the first patient, who operated in Paris in December 2013, lived through the new body for 75 days. The second, which doctors operated in Nantes in August 2014, survived nine months. The clinical trial to evaluate the replacement counts 20 patients.
The doctors transplanted first human heart in the Czech Republic on January 31, 1984.
As per the statistics from Coordination Center for Transplantation, there have been 227 transplants in the in the last three years and in this year till March the figure has reached to 7.
