Lassa outbreak strikes Abia, confirms authorities
The medical practitioner who was examining the patient has reportedly died.
Lassa fever has stricken another region. The Commissioner for Information in Abia, Mr John Okiyi, has confirmed. The outbreak was reported at Federal Medical Center, Umuahia.
The government and the hospital had started to check and contain the disease from the public.
"We have fully deployed all our emergency medical response systems to instantly ensure full containment and management of the outbreak,'' Okiyi said.
The medical practitioner who was examining the patient has reportedly died and all those who are suspected to be in contact with the patient are asked to report to the hospital for tests.
The commissioner ensured people that the state is well-equipped to tackle the disease and there is nothing to worry about.
Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Chuku Abali confirmed that a thorough investigation is being carried out by a team of investigators.
News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) has reported that the deceased medical practitioner contracted the disease after handling a child in the hospital suspected to be suffering from the disease.
