The Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to a one-year, $18.5 million deal with free agent catcher Yasmani Grandal, according to multiple media reports late Wednesday. Grandal, 30, spent the past four seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers after reaching the big leagues with the San Diego Padres in 2012. His deal with the Brewers reportedly is pending a physical. Last season, Grandal hit .241 with 24 home runs and 68 RBIs in 140 games. A switch hitter, he has topped 20 homers in each of the past three seasons.

In the postseason, he was benched due to his defensive deficiencies, with Austin Barnes taking over behind the plate for the Dodgers. Grandal committed two errors and two passed balls in the opening game of the National League Championship Series against the Brewers.

The move to acquire Grandal offers a significant offensive upgrade behind the plate for Milwaukee, which relied on Manny Pina and Erik Kratz to split time at catcher last season. The Brewers are looking to maintain their status atop a difficult National League Central Division that includes the Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and Pittsburgh Pirates. Grandal is one of the top players to sign so far in free agency. The market has been cold this offseason with teams seeking short-term commitments and waiting on top targets Bryce Harper and Manny Machado to determine their destinations.
