The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and distribution company (ZETDC) is all to set to launch a USD 45 million smart project enabling the large and medium powerhouses to manage their daily consumption with ease.

It came into effect after the failure on their part to deliver proper electricity supply to their existing customers. The officials in this context said that they had to go for three to four months without electricity resulting in a very low generation of revenue.

Speaking at the 2018 energy management symposium in Harare on Thursday, ZETDC managing director Engineer Julian Chinembiri said the migration to smart metering which is set for the fourth quarter of the year will enable the existing users to use electricity in a more efficient way.

"The project is estimated to cost USD 45 million and translating to a USD 1133 investment per meter which will enable ZESA to ensure that they bill and collect revenue in a timely and efficient manner resulting in a proper collection of revenue.

The prime motive of the project is to prepare the medium and large customers for the migration to a smart metering platform and familiarize them with new energy efficiency legislation that will impact on their operations as well.

"In 2017, Harare region had lost a total of 282 transformers of different sized valued at $5,6 million to theft and vandalism and this year till date we have lost around 60, he said

This resulted in the creation of large-scale power loss problems contributing to non-generation of revenue income.

Eng Chinembiri said ZETDC has engaged its sister company, Zesa Enterprises to manufacture transformers locally with the intention of solving the problem of foreign currency to import them.
