Karnataka Halts Private Sector Reservation Bill Amid Backlash

The Karnataka government on Wednesday paused the reservation bill for Kannadigas in private firms amid strong backlash from business leaders and technology moguls.

Originally cleared by the state Cabinet on Monday, the Karnataka State Employment of Local Candidates in the Industries, Factories and Other Establishments Bill, 2024, was set to be presented in the Assembly on Thursday.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah noted on social media that the bill is still in the preparatory stage and will be reviewed during the next cabinet meeting.

According to the bill, private firms must employ 50% local candidates in management roles and 70% in non-management positions. Business veterans have denounced the proposal as 'fascist' and 'regressive,' with TV Mohandas Pai, former CFO of Infosys, among the critics.
