Tragedy struck a group of 15 mountaineers in the Mont Blanc area on Monday when a large block of ice collapsed, resulting in one fatality and injuries to four others. The local prefecture confirmed the incident.
Rescue teams, utilizing a helicopter and dogs, managed to reach the mountaineers who were at an altitude of 4,100 meters (13,450 feet) when the ice block gave way in the early hours.
According to a prefecture official, the deceased was of French nationality, while the nationalities of the other individuals involved in the accident are yet to be identified.
