The last rites of Mukarram Jah, the titular Nizam VIII of erstwhile Princely State of Hyderabad, were conducted with State honours here on Wednesday.

After the Asr prayers, Mukarram Jah was laid to rest at the ancestral graveyard of the Asaf Jahi family here. His body was buried beside the grave of his father, Mir Himayat Ali Khan.

Members of the Nizam family, Telangana Home Minister Mohd Mahmood Ali were among those who attended the funeral.

The mortal remains of Mukarram Jah, who passed away in Turkey on January 14, were flown to the city on Tuesday. The body was kept at Chowmahalla Palace where Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao and AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi were among dignitaries who paid homage.

The body was today taken to the historic Mecca Masjid with a large number of people taking part in the funeral procession.

Shops and business establishments near Charminar in the old city remained shut as a mark of respect to the departed soul.

Born in 1933, Mukarram Jah had moved to Turkey and was residing there. It was his desire to be laid to rest in his homeland, according to a statement from an office of Mukarram Jah on January 15.

Chandrasekhar Rao, who condoled the death of Mukarram Jah, directed officials to conduct Jah's last rites with the highest State honours in recognition of his social services in the fields of education and medicine for the poor as the successor of the Nizam.

Mukarram Jah was born to Mir Himayat Ali Khan alias Azam Jah Bahadur, the first son of Mir Osman Ali Khan, the seventh Nizam of the Princely State of Hyderabad before it was merged with the Indian Union in 1948.
