Recent data confirms that Indian students remain the leading group of foreign enrollees at UK universities, despite stricter visa regulations. The Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) reports that in 2022-23, India accounted for 26 percent of students from outside the European Union, continuing a growing trend from previous years.
This growth is largely attributed to the Graduate Route visa, enabling graduates to work in the UK for two years post-graduation. The Labour government has endorsed this route, with Secretary of State for Education, Bridget Phillipson, reaffirming the UK's commitment to international students.
However, recent anti-immigrant sentiments and stricter immigration policies could potentially impact these statistics. The National Indian Students and Alumni Union (NISAU) UK expressed concerns over outdated figures masking current issues, highlighting a significant drop in visa applications since the crackdown on family dependents. The latest Home Office statistics indicate a 35 percent decline in skilled worker and student visas in early 2024.
