Renowned Neurosurgeon Granted Bail in Year-Long Pending Corruption Case

The Rouse Avenue Court has granted bail to renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Manish Rawat in a prolonged corruption case, citing a lack of substantial court hearings for over a year since the charge sheet was filed. At the time of his March 2023 arrest, Dr. Rawat was serving as an Associate Professor at Safdarjung Hospital.

Special CBI Judge Anil Antil, on July 16, approved Dr. Rawat's bail, referencing the prolonged duration of his custody and the absence of effective trials since May 29, 2023. The judge emphasized the constitutional considerations under Article 21 and acknowledged that the trial could take a considerable amount of time to conclude.

Dr. Rawat was granted bail upon furnishing a personal bond worth Rs 50,000, alongside a surety of the same amount. He is prohibited from leaving the country without court permission. Despite objections from the CBI, the court noted that the case's trial had not commenced, and critical evidence from CFSL had yet to be collected. Allegations against Dr. Rawat include long-term corrupt practices and a conspiracy involving co-accused individuals to exploit patients for financial gain.
