Muslims across India took part in Muharram processions on Wednesday, honoring the martyrdom of Imam Hussain. Tragically, these processions were marred by incidents including electrocutions and clashes, resulting in multiple deaths and injuries.
In Uttar Pradesh, three individuals, including a minor, were electrocuted and over 20 others suffered injuries as tazias came into contact with high-tension wires during processions in various districts. Similar incidents occurred in Bihar and Jharkhand, exacerbating the sorrow of the day.
Security was ramped up across the country to prevent further incidents, and prominent leaders issued calls for peace and reflection. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu highlighted the teachings of Muharram, urging communities to reject injustice and follow the path of peace.
