In Assam's Goalpara district, residents continue to grapple with the aftermath of devastating floods. Despite the receding waters, many are still living on roads and embankments, unable to return to their flooded homes.
Farmers in the district face severe challenges after the Brahmaputra River's floodwaters destroyed crops and inundated vast areas. Sanuar Hussain, a farmer from Pachim Kathuri village, has been particularly hard-hit. 'Flood is still here and we have been living on this road for the last 15 days. There is 5-feet deep water still inside my house. The flood waters damaged all my crops. Now I have no money.' Hussain, who took a loan from a bank for farming, fears he won't be able to repay without government intervention.
Another resident, Anuwara Khatun, described her family's plight, now living in a makeshift tent after their home was submerged. Her husband, a daily wage laborer, has struggled to find work due to the flood.
The Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) reports 97 fatalities in this year's flood, with 3.55 lakh people in 14 districts still affected. Although the situation is improving and river levels are dropping, 823 villages remain underwater.
