Workers at BHP's Escondida copper mine in Chile are set to go on strike following unsuccessful negotiations with the company, a union source confirmed on Tuesday.

As workers at the world's largest copper mine demand a 1% share of dividends to be distributed equally among themselves, the union stands strong in representing approximately 2,400 employees.

BHP, a dominant player in the mining industry, holds a majority stake in Escondida, in collaboration with Rio Tinto and JECO Corp.
