In a groundbreaking event, India launched its first reusable hybrid rocket, 'RHUMI-1', from Thiruvidandhai in Chennai on Saturday. The Tamil Nadu-based start-up Space Zone India, in collaboration with Martin Group, spearheaded the launch.
The RHUMI-1 rocket, carrying 3 Cube Satellites and 50 PICO Satellites, ascended into a suborbital trajectory using a mobile launcher. These satellites aim to gather data for research on global warming and climate change.
Equipped with a generic-fuel-based hybrid motor and electronically triggered parachute deployer, RHUMI-1 is notable for being 100% pyrotechnic-free and devoid of TNT. The mission was led by Anand Megalingam, founder of Space Zone India, under the mentorship of Dr. Mylswamy Annadurai, former director of the ISRO Satellite Centre (ISAC).
The innovative RHUMI-1 combines the advantages of both liquid and solid fuel systems, optimizing efficiency and cutting operational costs. Space Zone India, an aero-technology company based in Chennai, aims to provide cost-effective, long-term solutions for the space industry.
Additionally, Space Zone India offers hands-on training in aerodynamic principles, satellite technology, drone technology, and rocket technology. The organization collaborates with private institutions and various educational bodies to raise awareness about career options in the space industry. Notably, in 2023, as part of the 'Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Students Satellite Launch' mission, over 2,500 students from diverse educational backgrounds assisted in designing and constructing a satellite launch vehicle capable of carrying 150 Pico satellite research experiment cubes.
