Taiwanese Premier Cho Jung-tai addressed concerns about US support for Taiwan, emphasizing the nation's commitment to its own defense. Speaking at a press conference in Taipei, Cho asserted Taiwan's readiness to enhance security in the Taiwan Strait and Indo-Pacific region.
Cho highlighted efforts to increase defense spending, reinstate one-year compulsory military service, and bolster societal resilience. 'We believe these measures will garner greater international support,' he said, while expressing gratitude to the US for its concern over Taiwan's security.
The statements came in response to former US President Donald Trump's recent interview suggesting Taiwan should pay for its protection. Trump compared the US to an insurance company and criticized Taiwan for not offering compensation for defense. Cho underscored 'solid relations' with the US and expressed confidence in Taiwan's advanced technology staying domestic.
During the Republican National Convention, Trump secured his party's presidential nomination. He has advocated for increased financial contributions from Washington's allies, including NATO countries, to sustain US support.
