Karachi Battles Extreme Heat: 200 Heat-stroke Cases Reported During Muharram Processions

Amid the Muharram processions in Karachi, Jinnah Hospital reported over 200 heat-stroke cases at its camp in Numaish, according to ARY News. By 1:00 pm on Youm-e-Ashur, the hospital had already treated these cases.

Dr. Shahid Rasul, Executive Director of Jinnah Hospital, confirmed that all affected individuals received initial medical aid. The hospital has implemented measures to ensure timely treatment for heatstroke patients. Karachi is currently experiencing intense heat, with temperatures reaching up to 40°C and humidity levels at 53%, significantly increasing discomfort.

The Meteorological Department has forecasted a high of 41°C for the day with possible scattered rain in the evening. Northwesterly winds at 13 km/h and a suspended sea breeze are exacerbating the heatwave conditions. Citizens have been warned to take necessary precautions.

Recently, Karachi faced harsh weather on July 1, with temperatures at 39.2°C but humidity making it feel like 55°C, reported The Dawn. Dr. Sardar Sarfaraz of the Meteorological Department noted that the city's monthly average temperature during this heatwave is 4°C higher than usual.

"With 39.2°C on Sunday, it felt like 55°C at 5 pm. These are the hottest conditions since the 2015 heatwave," said Sarfaraz. He observed that similar weather patterns are repeating after nine years, with temperatures deviating around or above four degrees Celsius from the monthly average.

This year, the maximum temperature recorded was 42°C. Past heatwaves in 2015 and 2024 were also caused by low atmospheric pressure areas, according to the Met Department. (ANI)
