At least 16 people have died after a fire broke out in a shopping mall in southwestern China, authorities reported. The blaze started in the 14-storey commercial building in Zigong, Sichuan Province, on Wednesday night.
Firefighters and rescue teams worked through the night, successfully pulling 75 people to safety by early Thursday morning. The fire originated at the bottom of the building, which includes a department store, offices, restaurants, and a movie theatre. Initial investigations suggest that construction operations triggered the fire, though a detailed inquiry is ongoing.
Videos on social media showed thick black smoke billowing from the building's lower levels. The public was advised not to spread rumors about the incident. Firefighters deployed drones and water sprays to extinguish the flames. China has reported a 19% increase in fire-related deaths this year, with significant issues in public places due to faulty electrical or gas lines and carelessness.
