Former US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, in a private conversation with President Joe Biden, voiced concerns about his chances against Donald Trump in the upcoming 2024 election, according to four sources cited by CNN. Pelosi warned that Biden's continued candidacy might jeopardize the Democrats' prospects in the House.
President Biden pushed back, citing his own favorable polling data. One source described Biden as defensive about the polls, CNN reported. During the conversation, Pelosi involved Biden's longtime adviser Mike Donilon to discuss the data further.
Although the exact date of the call remains unclear, one source suggested it occurred within the last week. Pelosi has reportedly spent the intervening weeks gauging her colleagues' concerns. In a recent interview, she urged Biden to make a timely decision on his 2024 run.
White House spokesperson Andrew Bates reiterated Biden's intention to run and collaborate with congressional Democrats to advance his 100-day agenda. However, a Pelosi spokesperson noted she has been in California and hasn't spoken to Biden since the reported conversation.
Amid the party's increasing anxiety over Biden's chances, there are calls for leadership from Pelosi or former President Barack Obama. Members recognize that Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer lacks Biden's trust, while House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries does not have a strong rapport with Biden.
Many Democrats are looking to Pelosi for a resolution, with some believing that the turmoil will subside if she advises Biden to withdraw from the race.
