Pontiff held for sexually assaulting students shifted to Shivamogga hospital

The Murugha Math chief pontiff Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru was shifted to McGann government district hospital in Shivamogga for his health checkup after he complained of uneasiness, sources said on Thursday.

The pontiff is in the judicial custody after being held under POCSO and SC/ST Atrocities Prevention Act for sexually assaulting girl students.

"We have learnt that Sharanaru has been admitted to the McGann Hospital in Shivamogga. He has directly been sent from the jail to the Shivamogga Hospital and not through us," sources in the Health Department told PTI.

Sharanaru would undergo cardiac tests and the results submitted to the local court in Chitradurga in a day or two, the sources added.

The seer was arrested on September 2 and remanded in judicial custody till September 27.
