A city court here has rejected the bail plea of a man who was arrested for duping a childless couple of Rs 11 lakh after he forged Aadhaar cards of the surrogate mother and her husband.

The man was arrested on September 31 after the couple filed a police complaint at the Sadar police station on August 16. He was sent to judicial custody on September 5. The lawyer representing accused Karan Sukhija submitted before the court that his client had nothing to do with the case.

Opposing the bail plea, ASI Kashmir Singh said the investigation was pending and the opinion of the CMO was awaited. If bail is granted, there is a possibility of obstruction in the investigation, he said.

After hearing both sides, the court of Additional Sessions Judge Abhishek Futela on Wednesday rejected the bail plea of the accused.

''The investigation is at a nascent stage. The accused is not only facing allegations of cheating but also of creating fake I-cards and forging Aadhaar cards for changing the identity of the surrogate parents in order to dishonestly induce the complainant,'' the court order read.

''There are also allegations of physical abuse to the surrogate mother who suffered miscarriage in the sixth month of pregnancy. Considering the gravity of the alleged offences, the severity of the punishment provided for the alleged offences and for the aforesaid reasons, this court is of the opinion that applicant-accused Karan Sukhija is not entitled to bail at this stage,'' it added.
