Two men were arrested for allegedly carrying firecrackers from southwest Delhi's Cantonment area despite a ban on their sale and bursting in the national capital, police said on Saturday. The accused identified as Rohit Kumar (27) and Shyam Pandey (28) are residents of Paschim Vihar, they said. On Wednesday, police were patrolling in the Delhi Cantt area. When they reached Gopi Nath Market, they saw two persons on a scooty trying to escape after seeing them, a senior police officer said. However, they were nabbed after a brief chase. They were carrying two plastic bags in which a total of 25 kilograms of different firecrackers were recovered, the officer said. During the investigation, the accused disclosed that they bought the crackers for a wedding function, police added. The Delhi Pollution Control Committee (DPCC) has ordered a complete ban on the production, sale and use of all types of firecrackers in the national capital till January 1.

The DPCC order said the ban extends to the online sale of firecrackers. ''There will be a complete ban on the manufacturing, storage, selling (including delivery through online marketing platforms) and bursting of all kinds of firecrackers up to January 1, 2023 (sic),'' it read. Last year, the Delhi government announced a complete ban on firecrackers till January 1, 2022, to curb the air pollution that engulfs the capital and its adjoining areas throughout the winter season.
