A Kerala resident who had been missing for the last eight months and even presumed to be dead at one point was found living in Goa's Margao town, police said on Wednesday.
His family members had cremated a body found on the beach mistaking it to be his. Sathish (full name not known), who is in his late 30s, was taken into custody from a lodge in Margao on Tuesday, said inspector Tulsidas Naik of local police.
Before coming to Margao, he was staying at Bogmalo village near Vasco in Goa, Naik said. A five-member team of Kerala Crime Branch arrived in the state to take him back home.
Earlier, a body found on Thikodi Beach in Kerala was believed to be his, an official of the visiting police team said.
Satish's family even performed last rites and cremated the body. But a DNA test later established that the dead person was not Satish.
Following which, Kerala Police issued a look-out notice to trace him.
They received a tip-off that he was living in Goa, the Kerala Crime Branch official said.
Satish told reporters that he had gone to Ernakulum from where he ran away. He travelled to Punjab and Mumbai before landing in Goa and finding a job, he said.
Asked why he did not contact his family, he said he did not have a mobile phone. He also said he did not know that he had been presumed dead and `cremated'.
