National Conference leader Omar Abdullah on Wednesday criticized J&K Police Chief R R Swain's recent remark that regional outfits are collaborating with terror leaders for ''political gains,'' asserting that Swain had made a political speech.
Abdullah stated that the Centre should restore statehood to Jammu and Kashmir before the assembly elections as the Union territory has failed in multiple fronts, including combating terrorism and development. The former J&K chief minister emphasized that politicians should focus on their roles and leave law enforcement to the police.
Swain had claimed on Monday that Pakistan infiltrated civil society in J&K during peak militancy, alleging that regional parties formed ties with terror leaders for ''political benefits.'' Abdullah countered these claims, highlighting failures in governance and security within the UT.
Addressing the dangers of being a Union territory, Abdullah referred to recent notifications vesting powers with the lieutenant governor, stressing that true power must lie with the people. He reiterated calls for statehood restoration, in line with assurances from the Prime Minister and Home Minister.
Reacting to ongoing militancy in regions such as Jammu, Pir Panjal, and Chenab valley, Abdullah questioned the government's response to security threats. He criticized the administration for arresting Shia mourners during Muharram, accusing it of bias against Muslims.
