The Department of Homeland Security's inspector general is conducting an investigation into the US Secret Service's handling of security for former President Donald Trump during a Pennsylvania rally where an assassination attempt occurred.
According to a brief notice on its website, the agency aims to evaluate the Secret Service's “process for securing former President Trump's July 13, 2024 campaign event.” The timeline for the investigation's launch has not been disclosed. The shooting incident has sparked concerns about the security lapses, particularly how the gunman managed to position himself with a clear line of sight to Trump, who sustained injuries during the event.
President Joe Biden has already initiated an independent review of the security protocols in place during the rally. Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle acknowledged the importance of the review mandated by Biden and committed to full cooperation with both the independent review and congressional inquiries into the shooting.
