Muzaffarnagar police have ordered that all eateries along the Kanwar Yatra route must display the names of their proprietors to avoid any 'confusion'. Opposition parties have viewed this as targeting Muslim traders.
Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera labelled the order as 'state-sponsored bigotry', while AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi compared it to historical instances of Apartheid and Judenboycott in Nazi Germany.
Police chief Abhishek Singh stated that the move is designed to prevent law and order issues and is being followed voluntarily by all shops. However, opposition leaders have urged people and the media to oppose what they call discriminatory practices.
