Delhi Police Contemplates Uniform Overhaul for Weather Adaptability

The Delhi Police is planning to change the uniform of its personnel from the ranks of inspector to constable, official sources said on Wednesday. The force currently boasts more than 90,000 personnel, including DANIPS and AGMUT cadre IPS officers.

According to a senior police officer, the potential uniform change is driven by weather considerations in the national capital. 'It is in the planning stage and nothing has been decided yet. But if it does get changed, the 'khaki' color will remain,' the officer said. The proposed changes include T-shirts and cargo pants for the summer and woolen shirts, pants, and special quality warmers for the winter.

In some parts of Delhi, 'khaki' T-shirts and cargo pants are already being trialed by constables. The cargo pants provide practicality by accommodating multiple articles such as diaries, mobile phones, chargers, and ammunition. Such uniform choices are common in many foreign countries and among special units or paramilitary personnel in India. Desk personnel could also receive a separate uniform, while shoes, jackets, and caps may undergo seasonal changes.

The force is also planning to update tunic uniforms for formal functions like flag hoisting and parades.
