Four individuals were killed, and 26 others were injured during separate Muharram processions in various districts of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, police reported. Locations affected include Gonda, Pratapgarh, Ballia, Sant Kabir Nagar, and Kannauj.
In Gonda, a 12-year-old named Ashraf was electrocuted to death when a tazia fixture came into contact with a high-tension wire. Another person, Riyasat, was injured in the same incident and is currently stable.
The electrocution of processional participants was not isolated, with similar tragedies occurring in Telianpurwa village of the Itiathok area, Pratapgarh's Babuganj Railway Gate, and Bhatpur village in the Khalilabad Police Station area. Structural collapses during processions in Ballia and Kannauj added to the toll, injuring several children and causing fatalities.
