Student protesters demanding reforms in the quota system for government jobs announced a nationwide shutdown on Thursday, following violent clashes with security forces that left six people dead, including four students.
A key coordinator, Asif Mahmud, declared that all establishments would remain closed, barring hospitals and emergency services. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina deeply regretted the casualties and announced a judicial inquiry.
Despite the prime minister's plea for faith in the judiciary, protesters vowed to continue their demonstrations.
