Three cattle transporters from Uttar Pradesh met a tragic end last month when they jumped off a river bridge in Raipur district, Chhattisgarh, following a high-speed chase by a group of people. The police have ruled out any physical assault in the case, which has attracted significant public attention.
The chargesheet filed in the Raipur court on July 8 indicates that the trio was chased for more than 50km before they leapt off the bridge. The police have named five individuals in the chargesheet, who allegedly pursued the transporters and created a panic situation.
In a disturbing phone call, one of the victims indicated that they were under attack. Although initially charged under multiple sections including 307 (attempt to murder), the charge was downgraded to section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) after the autopsy ruled out homicidal injuries.
