The US military has announced the end of its humanitarian aid pier project in Gaza, citing recurrent weather and security challenges that hampered effective aid distribution. The pier, initially set up to deliver essential food and supplies to Palestinians, faced significant operational hurdles, including adverse weather conditions and security threats.
Israel plans to substitute the pier with the port at Ashdod to continue delivering aid, although details on this new strategy remain scant. Aid groups have raised concerns about land crossings and the safety of humanitarian workers, pointing to the region's volatile conditions and high-risk environment.
Despite achieving some success in delivering 20 million pounds of supplies, the mission fell short of expectations. President Joe Biden expressed disappointment over the project's efficacy. The pier operated less than anticipated, due to security threats and unpredictable weather, leading to critiques over the mission's planning and execution.
