India's Stance on Energy Cooperation Defended Amid International Pressure

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has come to India's defense amidst the intense international pressure over its energy cooperation with Russia. Lavrov described this pressure as 'completely unjustified' while recognizing India's rights to determine its national interests and choose its partners.

During a press conference on Wednesday, Lavrov condemned Ukraine's comments regarding the recent meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling them insulting. He emphasized that India is being targeted unfairly on the global stage for its ties with Russia.

Lavrov praised Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who has consistently justified India's decision to buy oil from Russia based on national interest. Jaishankar pointed out that many Western nations have also increased their energy purchases from Russia. This, Lavrov argued, reflects the West's diplomatic shortcomings and inability to engage with major Asian powers like India and China respectfully.
