Russia Accuses American Journalists of Delaying Prisoner Swap Talks

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov blamed American journalists on Wednesday for hindering negotiations with U.S. counterparts concerning a possible prisoner exchange involving Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich. Lavrov made these remarks at a UN news conference, emphasizing that confidential discussions are still ongoing.

Evan Gershkovich, who vehemently denies the espionage charges against him, is scheduled to appear in court tomorrow. Arrested on March 29, 2023, while on a reporting trip in Yekaterinburg, Gershkovich is accused of gathering secret information for the United States, allegations that both he and the Journal refute.

Conviction in Russia could mean a 20-year prison sentence for Gershkovich, although the country has indicated a willingness to consider a prisoner swap following a verdict. Russian courts often convict more than 99% of defendants, and prosecutors can appeal lenient sentences or even acquittals.
