Police have apprehended the primary suspect in a fake gold artefacts racket, identified as Saddam Sardar, from the Jhuprijhara area in South 24 Parganas district, officials reported on Thursday.
Authorities executed a raid at Sardar's hideout in Kultali during the early hours, resulting in his arrest along with his close aide Mannan Khan, according to a senior police officer.
“We have detained the key suspects, Saddam Sardar and Mannan Khan, from a shack inside a fishery in Jhuprijhara, where they were concealing themselves. They have been arrested in connection with multiple cheating cases and attacks on police personnel during a raid on July 15,” the officer stated. The suspects are set to be presented before a local court on Thursday.
Sardar and his accomplices have allegedly been deceiving people by selling fake gold statues for the past 15 years, the officer added.
