Three Omani nationals involved in a fatal shooting at a Shi'ite mosque in Muscat were confirmed to be brothers, according to police. The attack, conducted by individuals influenced by extremist ideologies, left six people dead, including four Pakistani nationals, an Indian, and a responding police officer.
The gunmen targeted the Ali bin Abi Talib mosque during a gathering for Ashura, an important Shi'ite Muslim observance. Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack, releasing a video and claiming it was part of a broader attempt to reassert influence in the region.
This incident has raised alarms, particularly because Oman, with its predominantly Ibadi Muslim population, has experienced relative sectarian harmony. The assault underscores the persistent danger posed by militant Islamic groups in the Middle East.
