Violence erupted in Malda district on Thursday, resulting in a clash with the police, according to officials.

Residents, protesting against ongoing power cuts, blocked the state highway at Enayatpur in Manikchak area during the morning. When police attempted to clear the road for traffic, locals refused to lift the blockade and started hurling stones at the officers, said SP Pradeep Kumar Yadav.

In the ensuing chaos, mob members also vandalised police vehicles, injuring three police officers. To control the situation, the Rapid Action Force was deployed to disperse the crowd.

Regarding allegations of police firing on protestors, SP Yadav stated, ''I cannot confirm this. I am going to the Malda Medical College and Hospital for more details after meeting the injured.'' Additional forces have been deployed in the area to prevent further disturbances, officials reported.
