At least 73 people lost their lives and hundreds were injured in clashes in Bangladesh on Sunday. Police deployed tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse tens of thousands of protesters who demanded Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's resignation. The government responded with an indefinite nationwide curfew starting at 6 p.m. (1200 GMT) and a three-day general holiday commencing Monday.
In an effort to curb the unrest, which has resulted in internet services being shut down, Hasina faces her biggest challenge in her 20-year reign. Critics and human rights groups accuse her government of excessive force, allegations that she denies. The protests have blocked major highways and violent confrontations have spread nationwide.
Incidents of violence included the deaths of 12 policemen in Sirajganj, and multiple casualties in Dhaka and other regions. The government has also disabled high-speed internet services, severely limiting communication. With tensions escalating, the army has been directed to safeguard lives and property, emphasizing their role as a 'symbol of the people's trust.'
