The Australian government on Monday escalated the national terrorism threat level from 'possible' to 'probable', citing increased radicalisation among youths and growing community tensions related to the Israel-Hamas war.
This marks the first elevation to the midpoint of Australia's five-tier National Terrorism Threat Advisory System since November 2022. The threat level had been stated as 'probable' for the prior eight years.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese assured the public that this change doesn't imply an imminent threat, but reflects a broader climate of increased danger. He affirmed that the government, acting on ASIO's advice, remains vigilant against a diverse range of extreme ideologies.
