Shiromani Akali Dal chief Sukhbir Singh Badal has sought 'unconditional forgiveness' for 'all mistakes' committed during the party's rule in a written statement to Akal Takht jathedar.
Former party leaders like Prem Singh Chandumajra and Bibi Jagir Kaur appeared before the jathedar on July 1 and sought forgiveness for 'four mistakes' made between 2007 and 2017.
The Akal Takht Secretariat released a copy of Badal's three-page letter to Giani Raghbir Singh on July 24, prompted by the rebel leaders' accusations. Sikh high priests will meet soon to deliberate on Badal’s letter.
Badal submitted the letter following the jathedar's request for an in-person appearance amid allegations by rebel leaders. A faction within the party had urged Badal to step down after the party's loss in the Lok Sabha polls.
The rebels cited four key errors during Badal’s tenure, including failure to act in sacrilege cases and pardoning Dera Sacha Sauda chief in a blasphemy case. In his letter, Badal emphasized his dedication to the Sikh faith and took responsibility for all mistakes, seeking forgiveness.
