New Leadership in NJ Senate: Murphy to Appoint Helmy

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy is set to appoint his former chief of staff, George Helmy, as the replacement for Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, following Menendez’s recent conviction on corruption charges, the New Jersey Globe reported on Wednesday.

Murphy, a Democrat, will reportedly extend the formal offer to Helmy on Thursday, with an official announcement slated for Friday. As of now, Murphy's office has not responded to requests for comment from Reuters.

Helmy, who served as Murphy’s chief of staff until October, is currently an executive at a healthcare company. He has previously worked with U.S. Senator Cory Booker and former Senator Frank Lautenberg. Menendez, who has been representing New Jersey in the Senate since 2006, announced his resignation last month following his conviction on charges of corruption, including bribery and acting as an agent for Egypt's government.
