Shadow Fleet Seizure: Swedish Authorities Nab Chinese Captain

A Chinese captain of an oil tanker believed to be connected to Russia has been arrested in Sweden for allegedly carrying false documents and violating seaworthiness laws, according to a Swedish prosecutor.

The Swedish Coast Guard, alongside police, boarded the Syrian-flagged ship, Jin Hui, in Swedish waters on Sunday, marking the nation's fifth such arrest of clandestine vessels this year. Authorities suspect the vessel is part of a 'shadow fleet' that Russia uses to circumvent Western sanctions related to the Ukraine conflict.

Although Russia has not commented on this latest seizure, it has previously accused such actions as hostile. The ship, docked in Sweden, appeared on several sanction lists, including those from the European Union and the UK, and was reportedly not carrying any cargo.
