Former speaker of Meghalaya Assembly, Martin M Danggo, on Wednesday joined the BJP ahead of the assembly elections scheduled on February 27.
Danggo, a five-term MLA, was welcomed by cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai at BJP's office in the presence of senior party functionaries and the former legislator's supporters.
Danggo was first elected to the assembly from Langrin seat in 1998 as a nominee of the People's Democratic Movement. In 2003, he was elected from the seat on a Congress ticket.
The seat was made part of Ranikor constituency after delimitation. He won the 2008, 2013 and 2018 elections from Ranikor. However, after getting elected in 2018, he resigned from the grand old party and joined the ruling National People's Party but was defeated in the by-election that followed that year.
Shullai, in his welcome address, said, "We will work together for the upliftment of the poor and more development of the state."
