The United States expressed concern about the arrest on Wednesday of the security chief of Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado and called for his immediate release as well as others whom the U.S. considers unjustly detained.
The U.S. views the arrest as 'contrary to the spirit' of a 2023 political agreement between the opposition and President Nicolas Maduro's government for the July 28 election, and intends to work with partners 'to uphold the democratic process,' a State Department spokesperson said.
