Russia's foreign minister, Sergey Lavrov, asserts that Moscow possesses 'irrefutable evidence' proving Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich's guilt in espionage, a day before Gershkovich's court appearance.
Lavrov accused American journalists of delaying US-Russia prisoner exchange talks by publicizing confidential negotiations, which he claimed are still 'ongoing.' He emphasized that Gershkovich's case is unrelated to 'attacks on journalism,' maintaining Russia's commitment to press freedom.
Gershkovich was arrested on March 29, 2023, in Yekaterinburg, with Russian authorities alleging he was gathering secret information for the CIA. Despite the accusations, Gershkovich, the Wall Street Journal, and the US government deny these claims.
The case has exacerbated tensions, with Lavrov criticizing the US for its strong reaction while highlighting Russia's subdued initial response to the expulsion of Russian journalists from the West. Lavrov suggested that Russia has retaliated proportionately.
Gershkovich is scheduled for his second court hearing on Thursday, facing up to 20 years in prison if convicted. Russia has indicated a possible prisoner swap post-verdict, noting their high conviction rates and prosecutors' rights to appeal lenient sentences or acquittals.
