JD Vance's Rise from Hardship to Vice Presidential Nominee

Ohio Senator JD Vance, relatively unknown in political circles, introduced himself to the nation as Donald Trump's vice-presidential nominee on Wednesday night at the Republican National Convention. Vance took the stage to share his story of growing up poor in Kentucky and Ohio, dealing with a drug-addicted mother, and an absent father. Despite these hardships, he joined the military and eventually ascended to the highest levels of U.S. politics.

“Never in my wildest imagination could I have believed that I'd be standing here tonight,” Vance said, appealing directly to the Rust Belt voters who played a crucial role in Trump's 2016 victory. Vance articulated his empathy for their frustrations, noting that jobs were sent overseas while children were sent to war in small towns across the country.

Senator Vance has rapidly transitioned from a critic of Trump to a staunch supporter. At 39, Vance is the first millennial to join the top of a major party ticket, introducing new dynamics in a race where voters are concerned about the age of candidates Trump and Biden, who are 78 and 81, respectively.
