JD Vance, the relatively unknown Ohio senator, introduced himself to the nation as Donald Trump's running mate in a Wednesday night address at the Republican National Convention. Vance used his speech to share the story of his hardscrabble upbringing and argue that the Republican Party best understands the challenges facing struggling Americans. The 39-year-old senator, who has served in the Senate for less than two years, cast himself as a fighter for the forgotten working class, appealing directly to Rust Belt voters, a significant demographic in Trump's 2016 victory.
At his first fundraiser as Trump's running mate, Vance was introduced by Indiana Rep. Jim Banks, who said that Trump’s decision to pick Vance was about the future of the country and the Republican Party. Vance spoke about his difficult childhood in Kentucky and Ohio, his service in the Marines, and his ascent to an Ivy League education and U.S. politics. He emphasized his loyalty to Trump’s 'Make America Great Again' movement, drawing a stark contrast with the 81-year-old President Joe Biden.
Among the notable moments at the convention was a speech by former White House official Peter Navarro, who, fresh out of prison, compared his legal troubles to those faced by Trump. The night also saw emotional tributes from the families of service members killed during Biden’s withdrawal from Afghanistan. Vance, authors of the bestselling memoir 'Hillbilly Elegy,' aims to become a new face for the Republican party while maintaining a strong allegiance to Trump's America First ideology.
