An Israeli delegation has arrived in Egypt to advance cease-fire discussions with Hamas, amid ongoing violence in Gaza. This development, confirmed by Egyptian airport officials, is part of international efforts to establish a phased truce and secure the release of about 120 hostages held by the militant group.
Recent talks were disrupted when Israel targeted a Hamas military commander, though his current status is unknown. The conflict, ignited by Hamas' October 7 attack on southern Israel that left around 1,200 dead and 250 abducted, has since led to Israeli offensives killing over 38,600 in Gaza, including civilians and combatants.
Meanwhile, Israel's parliament has extended a law allowing the shutdown of foreign media outlets deemed a security threat. This law has sparked debate over press freedom and democracy in Israel.
In related news, Israeli airstrikes in central Gaza have recently killed 11 people, including women and children. The strikes targeted areas where many displaced Palestinians have sought refuge. The Israeli military stated these attacks aimed at commanders from the militant Palestinian group Islamic Jihad.
