Thomas Djiwandono, nephew of Indonesia's President-elect Prabowo Subianto, was sworn in as Deputy Finance Minister on Thursday. Outgoing leader Joko Widodo initiated the move to ensure a smooth government handover.
Djiwandono will collaborate with finance minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati, known for her strategic fiscal policies. 'The addition of Thomas will make it much easier to communicate,' Indrawati remarked during a joint press conference.
Concerns have been raised about Prabowo’s costly fiscal promises, influencing market confidence. Djiwandono aims to synchronize the next administration's plans with the 2025 budget and keep the budget deficit within legal limits.
He has ruled out becoming finance chief but will remain deputy finance minister, continuing his role as Prabowo’s main fiscal spokesperson. Widodo also appointed another Gerindra politician as deputy agriculture minister, further strengthening the incoming administration.
