The Mexican government has officially requested that Ecuador allow jailed former Vice President Jorge Glas to relocate to a third country, citing health concerns.
The diplomatic rift between Mexico and Ecuador began in April when Ecuadorean authorities stormed Mexico's embassy to arrest Glas, to whom Mexico had granted asylum. Mexico also urged Ecuador to release Glas from prison and place him in a 'safe place' while awaiting a decision.
Glas, who attempted suicide in April, remains in jail despite an Ecuadorean court ruling his detention illegal due to previous convictions. Facing new corruption charges, his plight has further strained Ecuador-Mexico relations, with Switzerland now handling Mexico's diplomatic affairs with Ecuador.
