Nobel Peace Prize-winning economist Muhammad Yunus is poised to lead an interim government in Bangladesh following the dramatic resignation of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Yunus, who was pushed for the position by student protesters, will be sworn in as the chief adviser on Thursday.
Yunus, an 84-year-old renowned for his work in poverty alleviation, returns to Dhaka from Paris, where he was undergoing medical treatment. He expressed eagerness to help stabilize the nation amidst ongoing turmoil. His appointment follows Hasina's forced exit and her seeking refuge in neighboring India.
Bangladesh has been gripped by significant upheaval, with protests initially sparked by government job quotas evolving into wider grievances over economic conditions and political repression. Yunus, alongside the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, has called for a peaceful transition and fresh national elections within three months.
