Weather officials said Cyclone Vayu, with wind speeds equivalent to those of a Category 1 hurricane, is set to cross the Gujarat coast with sustained wind speeds of 145 kph to 155 kph (90 mph to 96 mph) and could gust as high as 170 kph (106 mph).

Indian authorities have assured that all preparations are in place to deal with any emergencies arising of the cyclone Vayu's impact and Gujarat government has said it had begun moving about 300,000 people from the most vulnerable areas into shelters.

Cyclone Vayu has changed its course and is unlikely to make landfall in Gujarat, but it will cause heavy rain in several coastal districts of the state, officials said Thursday. The state government, as a precautionary measure, has evacuated over three lakh people living in low-lying areas and thatched houses in the coastal districts.
